Privacy Policy

Who this policy is for
HeyScholr is a homeschooling tool used by a parent or legal guardian (the account holder) to plan lessons, track a child's progress, and keep records for homeschooling requirements. The account holder is always an adult. Children do not create or hold their own accounts.
Because the adult account holder creates the account, enters every child's information, and controls it, that adult provides consent for the child's information handled here. Kid mode runs inside the parent's signed-in session; it is not a separate account for the child.
Information we collect
Account information (the parent)
- Your email address, used to sign you in with a one-time code or through Google sign-in. If you use Google sign-in, we receive your email address and basic profile from Google, not your Google password.
Child profile (entered by you)
- The child's first name (or a nickname you choose), age, grade, and jurisdiction (province or state).
- Optional learning needs you select, such as ADHD, autism spectrum, gifted, dyslexia, or English language learner, and any free-text notes you add. You choose whether to provide these; they are used only to tailor lessons.
Learning activity
- Lessons generated, topics covered, quiz answers and scores, lessons marked complete, and points, levels, and streaks earned in kid mode.
- Activities you log yourself, including a short description of off-platform learning, an approximate duration, and an optional link you choose to add as evidence.
We do not ask for or intentionally collect a child's home address, phone number, precise location, or photographs. Please don't put information like that in the free-text notes or activity descriptions.
How we use information
- To run the core service: generate each day's lesson, build the weekly plan, adapt difficulty to how the child is doing, and show you progress and compliance summaries.
- To keep records you can use for your jurisdiction's homeschooling reporting, and to produce the summaries you can download.
- To sign you in and send you the one-time codes you request.
- To keep the service secure, diagnose problems, and understand which features are used so we can improve them.
We do not sell your information or a child's information. We do not use it to show you third-party advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles.
Service providers we share with
We use a small number of vetted providers to operate the service. They may process information only to perform their function for us, not for their own purposes:
- Supabase — stores your account and learning data and handles sign-in. Data is protected by per-account access rules so one family cannot read another's data.
- Vercel — hosts and serves the application.
- Groq — generates lesson content from artificial-intelligence models. To generate a lesson we send the grade, subject, topic, curriculum text, and the learning-needs context you provided (accommodations, notes, difficulty). We do not send the child's name.
- Google (YouTube Data API) — finds an age-appropriate teaching video for a topic. Videos are embedded in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), which limits the data YouTube collects until a video is played.
- Resend — delivers the sign-in code emails we send to your address.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the safety of a person, or as part of a business transfer, in which case we will require the recipient to honor this policy.
Children's privacy
HeyScholr is designed to be operated by a parent or guardian, and a child's information is provided and controlled by that adult. We treat children's information as sensitive and collect only what the service needs to teach and to keep your homeschooling records.
In the United States, we aim to align with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA): the parent holds the account and can review, correct, or delete a child's information at any time from the app, and can withdraw consent by deleting the child or the account. In Canada, we handle personal information consistent with PIPEDA. You can contact us with any request or question about a child's data.
Your rights and choices
- Access and correct: you can view and edit a child's profile and learning needs at any time in the app.
- Delete a child: removing a child removes that child's profile and associated learning records.
- Delete your account: this removes your account and the children and records under it. Contact us if you want us to confirm deletion.
- Export: you can download plain-language learning and compliance summaries from the app. For a broader copy of your data, contact us.
- Marketing: the only emails we send are the sign-in codes you request and occasional service notices. We do not send marketing email today.
To make any request, email privacy@learningforest.co. We may need to verify that you are the account holder before acting.
Retention and security
We keep your information while your account is active and for as long as needed to provide the service and keep the homeschooling records you rely on. When you delete a child or your account, we remove the associated data from our live systems; residual copies may persist briefly in encrypted backups before they expire.
We protect information with encryption in transit, per-account access rules, and access controls. No online service can promise perfect security, but we work to keep your family's information safe and to fix issues quickly.
Where your data is processed
HeyScholr serves families in Canada and the United States, and our providers may process and store data in either country. By using the service you understand that your information may be processed in a country other than the one you live in, under that country's laws.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service changes. When we make a material change, we will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, let you know in the app or by email. Continuing to use HeyScholr after an update means you accept the revised policy.
